STAFF, students, and family who feared that the annual Telegraph and Argus Education Awards would not be able to go ahead this year will still be able to join in.

Rather than cancel the ceremony, a virtual, live awards presentation will take place on Thursday, September 24, through a live link on the Bradford Telegraph and Argus website.

Steve Lowe, sales director at LocalIQ in West Yorkshire, said: “We have hosted this fantastic event , in partnership with Bradford District council and Bradford for Teachers, since 2014, so we didn’t want it to just disappear.

“We were receiving nominations between November and December last year, before the current Covid-19 situation kicked in, so we were anticipating holding the ceremony, as usual, in March.

“It was a huge disappointment when we had to cancel it, but we looked for a way that we could still hold the ceremony and present the awards to the winners. The answer was to move it online.”

“In some ways, this is a better format, because, by holding the ceremony online, we are not limited to numbers.

“Our planned venue – the Aagrah Midpoint restaurant - could accommodate about 400 people, whereas, through our live link, anyone – mums and dads, carers, grandparents, students and staff, friends and relatives – can log in and watch the live announcements and presentations.

“And, because we are doing it earlier than usual, it will be easier for children at primary school to join in as well.”

Nominees who would normally be tucking in to a banquet at the restaurant won’t miss out, either. The T&A is arranging for each household to receive a ‘take-away banquet delivery’ so that they can enjoy a meal at home on the night.

To watch the ceremony live, go to the T&A website on September 24, and click on the Telegraph and Argus Education Awards link on the home page. Proceedings will start at 6.30pm.

Steve, who will be hosting the event from the Bradford office, says: “We are crossing our fingers that everything runs smoothly, but this is a first for us, so we expect there might be some glitches.

“We are hoping to have the nominees in each category on screen before the winner is announced. We still want that sense of excitement and element of surprise that we would have at a live presentation.
