CONCERNS have been raised about a planned protest in Bradford amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Bradford City’s game against Harrogate Town, which was due to kick off at 3pm on Saturday, October 10, will now take place on Sunday, October 11 at 1pm.

It comes following discussions between the club, local authorities and West Yorkshire Police. Police said they are aware of a “proposed event” and are “liaising with our partner agencies to put appropriate plans in place to police the event”.

A police spokesperson said: "We aim to manage people’s right to protest, balanced with the wider public’s right to go about their daily business, with minimal impact on the local community, residents and visitors of Bradford.

"Parts of the Bradford district remain in local lockdown restrictions due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic due to high infection rates.

"We are continuing to work in partnership with the local authority and public health, as we have throughout the past few months, to encourage people to recognise the risks that taking part in any events or gatherings, present to individuals, their families and their communities.

"Any large gatherings, especially in high-risk areas, are not permitted in line with current Government and Public Health guidance, as they pose a heightened risk of spread of infection to the public and communities.

"While we are committed to engaging, explaining and encouraging compliance with the restrictions, we know that enforcement may be a necessary option.

"We do however hope that people will recognise the ongoing risks of holding or taking part in such events and do the right thing in everyone’s best interests."

Bradford Council Leader Susan Hinchcliffe said: “Far right organisations have no place in the Bradford district, they bring hate and are not welcome. The police have our full support in standing up to this group.

"Should they come, I would urge all residents to ignore them and get on with their lives as usual. They deserve nothing more.”
