The name is directly derived from the Greek word meaning “rainbow”, which symbolises good luck. There are 2,760 searches monthly from those researching the origins and meaning being the baby name Iris.
The second most popular ‘lucky’ girl’s name comes from Greek origin, meaning “bearer of good news”, Evangeline. This name has a total of 770 Google searches this month from parents-to-be and is the 43rd most popular girl’s name according to nameberry.com
Meaning “she who brings happiness; blessed” in Latin, Beatrice is the third most popular lucky girl’s name, and is 78th most popular among parents this year. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that there are 1,020 searches made each month from those analysing the name.

The trendiest lucky baby boy’s name of 2020 is Asher, which stems from Hebrew and means “Happy; happiness”. Interestingly, Asher is the second most popular baby boy’s name this year and there are a huge 2,290 searches monthly from intrigued parents wishing luck upon their child.
In second place is Felix, similar to Asher, it derives from Latin and simply means “happy; lucky”. Overall, Felix places as the 18th most popular boy’s name on nameberry.com and receives a total of 1,940 searches monthly!
Quinn is said to come from the Irish-Gaelic word “ceann” meaning “sense and intelligence” and it ranks as the third most desired lucky boy’s name. It receives 4,740 searches each month and places as the 421st most popular among parents.
Why Are Parents Choosing Lucky Baby Names?
Following this research, Compare.bet were keen to uncover the general opinion of a ‘lucky’ name. Therefore, they surveyed 3,428 parents and parents-to-be to find out what they really think.
Compare.bet found that almost 8 in 10 (78%) would consider giving their child a lucky name, with only 22% wishing to avoid it. Of those who would do so, a whopping 94% believe giving their child a name with meanings of good fortune will help them later in life.
Of those considering giving their baby a lucky name, their main reasons are as follows: 1. It will bring them luck/help them in life – 44% 2. It’s pretty – 23% 3. It’s trendy – 15% 4. I simply like the meaning behind the name – 14% 5. I am superstitious – 4% Of those not considering giving their baby a lucky name, their reasons are as follows: 1. They’re too mainstream – 38% 2. I don’t believe in it – 6% Methodology Compare.bet analysed the current most popular 1,000 baby names for both boys and girls, looking for those that are most desired but also have meanings of luck and good fortune. Each name's ranking is determined by its overall popularity through interest on nameberry.com.
They used SEMrush to find the search volumes for each name, searching for terms such as “Iris name”, “Iris baby name” and “Iris girls name”. All data was collected on 24/08/2020.
Compare.bet also surveyed 3,428 parents and parents-to-be in August 2020 to find out what they think about ‘lucky names’, asking the following questions: Would you consider giving your child a lucky name?, If yes, do you think giving your child a name with connotations of luck will help them in life?, What is your main reason for considering a ‘lucky’ baby name? and What is your main reason for not considering a ‘lucky’ baby name?
