THE National Science and Media Museum’s Pictureville Cinema will reopen to the public this autumn with a unique programme of blockbusters, family favourites, independent film, and live cinema experiences.

Last month, the museum announced that its cinemas will have a phased reopening, starting with the Pictureville screen on 17 September and followed by the IMAX and Cubby Broccoli screens on 2 October.

The cinemas have been closed to the public since March, due to COVID-19, and will reopen with enhanced safety and hygiene procedures in place.

Tickets are now available for Pictureville’s special reopening event on 17 September, in partnership with the Yorkshire Film Archive.

Visitors can see two showings of Bradford on Film - at 4.30pm and at 7pm - exploring film footage of Bradford throughout every decade of the 20th century, and into the 21st.

The IMAX screen will reopen on 2 October, with Christopher Nolan’s eagerly anticipated action epic Tenet, starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson.

Exclusively in IMAX theatres, sequences shot with IMAX cameras will visually expand to fill the entire giant screen, allowing audiences to experience more of the image with IMAX’s trademark sharpness and clarity.

Tickets for Tenet are now available online.

Highlights on the Pictureville screen from 18 September include Mission Impossible: Fallout, La Haine (4K Restoration), White Riot, Nocturnal, The Perfect Candidate, Elvis: That’s the Way it is and National Theatre Live: Fleabag.

From 25 September, Pictureville will also be showing The Wizard of Oz, Alien, Parasite: Black and White Edition, Clemency, Make-Up, David Attenborough: Life on Our Planet, Les Miserables and National Theatre Live: Cyrano de Bergerac.

Trolls World Tour will also be screening as part of the cinema Kids Club.

Pictureville is also introducing a "You-Choose-Day" on the first two Tuesdays of reopening, giving audiences the power to programme what they want to see in the cinema.

On 22 and 29 September, the programme will be opened up to visitors, letting them decide which films they would like to see brought to Pictureville.

Visitors can head to the Facebook page to cast their vote for either Shaun of the Dead or Monty Python’s Life of Brian on the comedy night, and either La La Land or A Star is Born on the musicals night.

Kathryn Penny, Head of Screen Operation, said: “We are thrilled to be reopening Pictureville Cinema after all this time. The past months have been incredibly challenging for the museum and our cinema operation, as has been the case across the sector.

"We hope that audiences are as excited as we are to get back up and running, and we have an excellent programme of events lined up to mark the occasion.

"We also want to reassure our visitors that theirs and our staff’s safety is our top priority and we are taking all of the necessary precautions to ensure that their trip to the museum and our cinemas is safe."
