A rigger narrowly escaped a driving ban after Skipton magistrates heard he would lose his job.

Martin Dinsdale, 20, sped up to 89mph to pass some slow cars on the A59 at Broughton on April 9, the bench was told on Wednesday.

Dinsdale, of Main Street, Farnhill, was also driving his Fiat Punto without insurance.

In mitigation, Adam Walker said Dinsdale, who worked for a telecommunications firm building masts, had slowed down immediately after passing the two slow moving cars.

As for the insurance, he said Dinsdale had taken up the offer of a special deal with his insurance company for ten months cover and had forgotten to renew it.

Mr Walker said Dinsdale travelled all over the country and abroad as part of his job and would not be able to work without his licence.

Dinsdale, who already had five points on his licence for driving without due care and attention in May, 2005, was warned by magistrates that he needed just one more point on his licence to be banned.

Dinsdale, who pleaded guilty by letter at an earlier hearing, was given six penalty points for having no insurance and fined £200. For speeding, his licence was endorsed and he was fined £200. In addition, he was ordered to pay £45 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
