FIRE crews from Odsal and across West Yorkshire were scrambled to a 15-storey apartment block in the early hours of today as scores of residents had to be evacuated due to flooding.

Crews were called to the incident, in Wellington Street, Leeds, at 4.50am after a water leak from the mains supply flooded apartments in the 364-flat block.

Around 30 flats were badly affected, and their occupants had to be evacuated and are being rehoused by the property management company.

A structural engineer had to be called to inspect the integrity of the building due to the weight of the water to ensure it was safe, and salvage work was carried out by fire crews.

As well as Odsal fire station's Logistical Support Unit, crews from Stanningley, Leeds, Hunslet, the Major Salvage Unit from Mirfield and a Welfare Unit from Skelmanthorpe were all called to the scene.
