THE team at the Hermes site in Low Moor, Bradford, held a ‘socially distanced’ send-off to their long-time day loader Trevor Lee.

Trevor, who started in the trade at 15, has retired after more 50 years in the business.

"It's a real pleasure to say that he worked for us but a real loss to say that he doesn't anymore," depot manager Stephen Taylor said.

His colleagues treated him to a range gardening tools and B&Q vouchers to help him fulfil his dreams of spending more time in the garden.

Mr Taylor added: "He's been a long standing person here. He's worked for the business for over 50 years.

"It's only in the past few months that it's got him to reflect that he needs to spend some time with his wife and live life a little now that he's reached the age he's at.

"He's very much the mainstay of the company and the face of the company really. He loved his job. When he came to say goodbye, he was really emotional about leaving.

"He always had a smile on his face, nothing was too much for him."

Trevor, who lives in Odsal, can still remember his first wage - six pounds and sixpence.

"All manual work - it was a bit of a shock from leaving school," Trevor said.

"I enjoyed it. I made some really good friends over the years, lost a few as well, met the wife on the bus going to work. All told it's been a good, enjoyable 50 years.

"I'm keeping busy. I've just enjoyed it there, they've looked after us."
