THE EXTRA coronavirus restrictions in Bradford and other West Yorkshire districts is set to be reviewed today as the number of cases in the area shows no sign of dropping according to the latest figures.

The easing of lockdown was reversed two weeks ago in a late-night announcement by Health Secretary Matt Hancock and is being assessed every week by the Government.

Tougher enforcement measures were announced today as the Prime Minister confirmed plans to open up more of the economy from Saturday, potentially adding to the risk of spreading coronavirus.

The moves were postponed from August 1 due to concerns about a slight increase in the number of people in England testing positive but that now appears to have levelled off.

But the changes will not apply in the specific areas - including Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees - where local restrictions are in place unless those are lifted today.

Boris Johnson said: "Most people in this country are following the rules and doing their bit to control the virus, but we must remain focused and we cannot be complacent.

"That is why we are strengthening the enforcement powers available to use against those who repeatedly flout the rules.

"At every stage I have said our plan to reopen society and the economy is conditional and that it relies on continued progress against the virus.

"Today, we are able to announce some further changes which will allow more people to return to work and the public to get back to more of the things they have missed.

"However, as I have always said, we will not hesitate to put on the brakes if required, or to continue to implement local measures to help to control the spread of the virus."

The latest figures of the rolling seven-day rate of new cases of Covid-19 for every local authority in England show that Bradford is still the fifth worst district in the country.

For the seven days to August 9, Bradford recorded 54.7 positive tests per 100,000 population with 295 new cases compared to 52.6 per 100,000 and 284 new cases in the previous seven-day period.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent three days (August 10-12) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

In Calderdale there were 44.5 cases per 100,000 people recorded (94 new cases) compared to 39.7 (84) previously while in Kirklees there were 30.2 positives per 100,000 (133 new cases) up from 26.1 (115) in the previous seven-day period.

Oldham had the highest rate, jumping from 62 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 2 to 104.6 in the seven days to August 9. A total of 248 new cases have been recorded.

In Pendle, the rate has risen from 66.2 to 82.5, with 76 new cases.

Blackburn with Darwen is third, where the rate has fallen from 83.5 to 73.5, with 110 new cases.

Leicester has seen a rise from 56.7 to 68.9, with 244 new cases.

The latest figures by postcode in the week August 2-9 show that the number of cases in the Shearbridge & University area have fallen from the low 30s - one of the worst in the country - to 21.
