A BRIDGE at a popular beauty spot in Ilkley will be closed this weekend to prevent large numbers of people congregating.

Large crowds have gathered at the River Wharfe in Ilkley during periods of warm weather this year - ignoring pleas to remain socially distant.

With warm weather predicted today and this weekend, the concern that people may gather and potentially spread Covid 19 had become so great that Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Police has announced that it will be closing off the bridge at Denton Road from today until the end of Sunday.

A Council spokesman said the closure is due to "A proactive campaign to address issues of anti-social behaviour and respond to resident concern."

They added: "Visitors are welcome to enjoy the area but we do ask that they act responsibly, observe requirements around social distancing and behave considerately by disposing of their litter correctly.

"Large volume bins are positioned throughout the park at most entry/exit points.

"We thank local residents for their patience and understanding as we seek to maintain a safe environment and encourage the respectful use of the area."
