The inquest of Bradley Gledhill, who was fatally stabbed in a street fight in Batley in June, was opened this morning at Bradford Coroners’ Court.

Mr Gledhill, 20, of Heckmondwike, was wounded after a fight broke out late at night on Sunday, June 21, in Park Croft, Batley, before dying later that night in hospital.

Three members of Mr Gledhill’s family were in attendance at the five-minute hearing, presided over by Assistant Coroner Katy Dickinson.

Detective Chief Inspector Vanessa Rolfe, senior investigating officer on West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team was also in attendance.

She said: “On June 21 at approximately 10.30pm there was an incident in Park Croft, Batley, involving a number of youths, where Bradley Gledhill was brutally murdered.

“He was injured and taken to Leeds General Infirmary, and confirmed to have died at 11.15pm.

“He was stabbed in an altercation. A police investigation is ongoing and five people have been charged with murder.”

Assistant Coroner Ms Dickinson told Mr Gledhill’s family she had to suspend the inquest to allow the criminal investigation to be completed. She told Mr Gledhill’s family that if those arrested did kill him, she “hopes they will get a conviction”, and thanked them for attending the hearing.

Five people, aged from 16 to 23, have been charged with the murder of Bradley Gledhill.

Usman Karolia, 19, and Ahmed Karolia, 23, both of Lime Tree Avenue, Batley, and Raja Nawaz, 18, of Longfield Road, Heckmondwike, appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 25, charged with the murder of Mr Gledhill and the attempted murder of two other people.

On Saturday, July 18, another teenager – a 16-year-old boy from Dewsbury – was also charged with murder, attempted murder and joint enterprise and appeared in front of magistrates in Leeds that day.

All five appeared at Leeds Crown Court on July 23, where the Karolias and Raja Nawaz all pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Gledhill. The Karolias also denied the attempted murder of two other people. This charge was not put to Nawaz, and the two youths were not required to enter any pleas.
