Next week is national afternoon tea week- and there are some fantastic places that sell them in Carlisle.

Best of all, every afternoon tea on this list costs less than £15- some even benefit from the government’s Eat Out to Help discount.

The Corner House

The Corner House serves afternoon tea tiers or takeaway boxes, depending on your preference.

The afternoon tea for one consists of 4 finger sandwiches, 1 tray bake, 1 mini victoria sponge, 1 mini scone with jam, butter & clotted cream portions, 1 slice of quiche, 2 homemade sausage rolls- this cost £8.50.

They also sell the continental box for two people, which is heaven for cheese lovers- it costs £14.99.

The box includes: continental meats, mature ham, sliced baguette with butter portions, pot of olives, pot of sundried tomatoes, pickled gherkins, peppers, bunch of grapes, brie and edam cheese.

Janette owns The Corner House and said their afternoon teas are freshly prepared and locally sourced.

She added: "We have been taking part in the governments ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme which afternoon teas to eat in are included." 

Bartons Yard Café and Bar

Smoked salmon, roast beef and coronation chicken are just some of the savoury sandwiches available on the afternoon tea menu.

They even have vegetarian option, including: egg and mustard mayonnaise on white bread, roast vegetable and chick pea mayo on multigrain bread, cheese savoury on multigrain bread, pickled cucumber and cream cheese on white bread and vegetarian sausage roll.

They also serve homemade sweet treats such as scones, raspberry white chocolate and lemon teacakes, butterscotch and biscoff cupcakes and macarons.

Afternoon tea is available from just £10 per person on the Eat Out to Help scheme- it is available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 1pm-6pm.

Sally’s

If you want to enjoy an afternoon tea from the comfort of your own home, then Sally’s is the place to go.

Takeaway afternoon tea boxes are £12 per head- but you have to give 48 hour notice when you order.

The boxes include classic scones with clotted cream, jam and butter, sandwiches and a selection of miniature sweet treats and cakes.

Sally Longstaff, owner of the business, said: "Our afternoon teas are great value for money.

"Everything is made by us- our special spiced apple and ginger chutney was made exclusively for us by Claire's Handmade.

"Our scones are our speciality and they have travelled as far as Sri Lanka and Tenerife."

The boxes contain sandwiches in a variety of flavours, along with a selection of cakes and sweet treats.

The Castlegate Coffee House

The Castlegate Coffee House is the place to be if you want a truly traditional afternoon tea.

This tea includes a selection of sandwiches, homemade quiche & sausage rolls, a selection of homemade cakes with scones with jam/cream- all this can be washed down with tea and coffee.

An eat in afternoon tea will cost £12 per person- takeaway is £9 per person.
