THE New to Me shop at Bradford Council’s Bowling Back Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre is to re-open this week.

The shop lets people purchase items that would have otherwise been destined for landfill.

After a lengthy closure due to Covid 19 the store will re-open on Thursday and Friday from 10am to 4pm. It will be a trial to see if it can successfully operate under social distancing conditions, keeping customers and staff safe.

If everything goes well, the shop will operate at the same hours on the same two days a week for the near future giving people the chance to acquire perfectly usable items which other people no longer require but are too good to be thrown away.

Staff at household waste recycling centres across the district look out for goods which have been deposited, but are still considered useful to others.

They are collected and delivered to the ‘shop’ at Bowling Back Lane where people can give them a good home at the cost of £1 for each item.

The goods on offer include everything from items of furniture to ornaments, pots, pans, cutlery, DVDs, books and CDs.

Visitors to the shop will have to queue with other HWRC users to get access and will require a Bradford household waste site permit to be allowed on to the site.

Extra 500 tonnes of waste collected in Bradford per week during pandemic

Shoppers must stay in their cars until invited into the shop by a members of staff and face masks must be worn at all times.

Cllr Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “We are really pleased to re-open this service which diverts even more waste away from landfill or incineration.

“It makes no sense for us to dispose of items which may be wanted by other people and our store of attractive goodies has been building up during lockdown.

“If people follow social distancing guidelines and stay safe there should be no problems with re-opening the shop.”
