Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Alhambra Theatre, Bradford

Say what you like about televised talent shows, but they certainly know how to fill theatres.

This Joseph production has four young men who will be familiar to Saturday night viewers including Craig Chalmers, one of the highlights of the BBC's Any Dream Will Do series, who plays the title role.

This Edinburgh-born singer was chosen, it seems, because he resembles a chunkier Jason Donovan (the original Joseph star) and he rose to the challenge with aplomb.

He has a fine voice and hams up the role beautifully. He's a real Jason McDonovan and he interacted with the audience like a true star.

He tells us that six months ago a typical audience for him would have just about filled the front row of the Alhambra. Now he's playing to full houses. He and his fellow talent show successes have made Joseph a sell-out.

Watch out for Keith Jack. He came second in Any Dream Will Do and plays the narrator, using his puppy-dog charm to the full.

In fact, he probably has a better voice than Craig and he links the show well.

Chris Barton (Benjamin in this show, but who also plays Joseph and the Narrator in some shows) and Wayne Smith (Pharoah and Gad) are also television talent show contestants. They, too, bring some verve to the show, especially Smith's Elvis imitation.

The rest of the cast support the show with gusto. It's a high-energy production with Joseph's ten brothers forming a special bond with the audience. Watch, too, for non-stop dancer Stephanie Harrow (one of the handmaidens, and a familiar face on many pop videos and Top of the Pops). Goodness knows where she gets her energy.

Runs until Saturday.
