JULY 30, 1970, residents of Bradford’s Smiddles Lane had turned to the Telegraph & Argus to voice their concerns over what could only be described as a "Berlin Wall" built outside their front gardens by the council.
Angry residents claimed that they had not been warned about the wall as Bradford Corporation began its road raising scheme to provide a suitable slip road to meet Southfield Road.
All ten residents whose homes faced the wall signed a petition asking the Corporation to halt the project and talk things over with them.
“There is no question of halting the scheme now, stated one spokesman. It is too far advanced.”
The only other option, in form of some compensation, would be the possibility of reduced rates.
