JET2 says it is running flights to Spain from Leeds Bradford Airport as normal, but is reviewing options for customers after the Government advised against non-essential travel to the mainland and ordered holidaymakers to quarantine for 14 days on their return to the UK.

The Yeadon-based airline says it is still running its scheduled programme of flights to and from mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

But it added it was reviewing options for customers due to travel to Costa de Almeria, Alicante, Malaga and Murcia.

The UK has removed Spain from its list of safe countries to travel to after fears were raised that the European country was experiencing a second wave of coronavirus infections.

Only the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa) and Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera) are exempt from the FCO advice against all non-essential international travel.

The advice is based on evidence of increases in cases of Covid-19 in several regions, particularly in Aragon, Navarra and Catalonia.

Those returning from Spain (including the Canaries and Balearics) will have to self-isolate for two weeks upon their return to the UK.

A Jet2 spokesman said: “Following the latest government advice regarding travel to the UK from Spain, we are advising customers to arrive for their flights as normal as we are continuing to operate our scheduled programme to and from mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

“We are still operating flights and holidays to four destinations in mainland Spain (Costa de Almeria, Alicante, Malaga and Murcia), which are open and are located away from areas which have been impacted by increased cases of Covid-19.

“In light of the updated advice from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), we are in the process of reviewing options for customers due to travel to these four destinations.

We are also continuing to operate flights and holidays to our destinations in the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands as scheduled.

“Because the FCO travel advice to these destinations remains unchanged, our usual terms and conditions apply.

“As always, we advise customers to purchase appropriate travel insurance before travelling.

“This is a fast-moving situation, which we will continue to monitor very closely.”

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the Government will not apologise for reimposing strict quarantine rules at short notice on travellers returning from Spain.

Ministers announced on Saturday that holidaymakers who had not returned from Spain and its islands by midnight would be forced to quarantine for 14 days after Covid-19 second wave fears saw the European country struck off the UK's safe list.

The sudden timing of the announcement was criticised by the travel sector and consumer rights groups but Mr Raab said the Government was right to take "swift" action.

The quick turnaround caught out even Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, who is currently in Spain for his summer break and will join thousands of others in being forced to self-isolate for a fortnight on his return to Britain.

The decision was taken to suspend the so-called travel corridor with the UK's most popular holiday destination after Spain recorded more than 900 fresh daily Covid-19 cases for two days running.

Mr Raab told Sky News' Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme: "The data we got was on the Friday, it showed a big jump right across mainland Spain. That was then assessed yesterday afternoon and we took the decision as swiftly as we could.

"And we can't make apologies for doing so.”

Consumer rights and travel groups expressed frustration at the lack of warning over the suspension of the travel corridor, with Tui, the UK's biggest tour operator, questioning why "we didn't get more notice of this announcement" with thousands of Britons flocking to Spain over the weekend.

Travellers also hit out at the Government's blanket decision to include the Spanish islands in the isolation measures.

The Foreign Office is now advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain but the quarantine measures also apply to the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, such as Mallorca and Ibiza, despite having lower infection rates.
