A PERSON has died after being hit by a train at a Merseyrail station this morning, police have confirmed.

The incident, which is not being treated as suspicious, happened at Eastham Rake station shortly before 8.30am.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Since 8am a number of Chester to Liverpool and Ellesmere Port to Liverpool services have been cancelled due to the incident.

A rail replacement bus service to run between both stations and Rock Ferry is currently in operation.

British Transport Police said in a statement: “British Transport Police were called at 8.27am on 10/07 to Eastham Rake station following a report of a casualty on the tracks.

"Officers attended but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

"Officers are in the process of preparing a report for the coroner.”

Merseyrail said earlier this morning: "Due to a person being struck by a train, 0917 Ellesmere Port - Liverpool is cancelled.

"This service will be reinstated at Rock Ferry departing at 0942, calling all stations into Liverpool.

"A Rail Replacement bus service is being organised to run between Rock Ferry and Chester/Ellesmere Port.

"More information will be announced once available."

National Rail said: "Rail replacement buses have been requested to run between Rock Ferry and Chester/Ellesmere Port, and will be in place from approximately 09:45.

"A half hourly train shuttle service is running between Rock Ferry and Liverpool Central."
