THE major refurbishment of a Bradford pool will cost more than originally planned after the pool's filters were "condemned" after an inspection.

Bradford Council's plans to upgrade Bowling Pool include adding a new gym and poolside sauna to the facility.

I has now been revealed that the works, which were due to cost £433,000, will now cost an extra £50,000.

At a meeting of the Council's Executive today, members will be asked to provide this extra funding from a contingency budget.

A report going to the Executive says: "The existing two pool filters were due to be refurbished and repaired as part of the Bowling Pool Major Works Scheme included in the Estates Capital Programme.

"However following further inspection they have been condemned.

"The additional cost of new filters has been identified as £0.05m and the funding is not available within property programme budget.

"An additional £0.05m has been requested to be funded from the contingency budget."

The Council has said the pool works would be an “invest to save” scheme, with officers predicting that increased use of the centre, and people switching from private gyms to the municipal facility, would easily pay for the project in the long run.

It would also boost the public purse at a time when the Councils across the country face significant financial problems.
