The daughter of Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar was today jailed for three years and nine months for the manslaughter of her two-year-old son Harris.
Samaya Rafiq, 28, pleaded guilty to manslaughter by gross neglect and four charges of child cruelty.
Bradford Crown Court heard that Harris ingested heroin, crack cocaine and methodone which his drug addict mother was using, mainly through passive smoking in the room they shared at a women's hostel in the Bradford district.
The Recorder of Bradford, Judge Stephen Gullick, told Rafiq he accepted she had not intended to kill her son but she failed to carry out her duties to protect him because of her overwhelming need to satisfy her own drug needs.
