RESIDENTS and businesses in and around Brighouse are invited to share their thoughts on improvement plans for the town.

A draft masterplan has been created for Brighouse town centre by Calderdale Council in partnership with the Brighouse Town Development Board, which is made up of Calderdale Council representatives as well as local businesses and residents of Brighouse.

The plan will be submitted as part of a bid for funding from the Government’s Towns Fund – along with Todmorden, Brighouse could get up to £25 million, if awarded.

A consultation is now taking place for people to have their say on initial plans, starting on Monday June 29, and ending on Monday, July 13.

The detailed proposals will be available online at www.calderdalenextchapter.co.uk where there will also be an opportunity to complete the feedback form.

The council says the initial proposals, which have been shaped by local knowledge, build on the existing aspects that make the town special, including its unique and diverse events, the compact town centre, good accessibility and links to neighbouring towns and cities, plus its range of independent shops.

Proposals include introducing improved access for pedestrians and cyclists, new public spaces around the canal, measures to help support retail and increased leisure and recreation options.

The council’s Cabinet member for Regeneration and Resources, Coun Jane Scullion, said the council knew the town has a lot to offer.

“This funding will enable us to build upon the many positives already found in the town.

“To support our bid for this significant funding, we’ve prepared a masterplan for the town which looks to build on the strengths of Brighouse and make improvements to the areas which are felt to be holding it back.

“Our initial plan has been created with support from the town’s development board and we’re now seeking further input from the wider Brighouse community to ensure the plan meets the needs of local people,” she said.

The responses will be used to prepare a detailed funding bid which will be submitted to the government later this year.
