PEOPLE living on a street in Bradford Moor blighted by fly-tipping are calling for a longer term solution to the problem.

Councillor Mohammed Shafiq says he was shocked at the level of furniture and household waste regularly dumped in an alleyway between two homes on Wensleydale Road.

Pictures show the area, off Leeds Road in the city, has become a hotspot for fly-tipping with an old sofa, fridge, child's pushchair and a shopping trolley full of waste among the items currently dumped there.

Cllr Shafiq said residents had raised their concerns with him, particularly about it becoming both a health and fire hazard.

He told the Telegraph & Argus: "The level of fly tipping is becoming a real concern to local residents. A small number of mindless people who have no regards to our local area or communities have dumped all sorts of fly-tipping in the alleyway - this is completely unacceptable behaviour.

"It is a well used area by residents walking to school and other local facilities. Many of the residents in the area are concerned that this huge amount of dumped waste is a health hazard and more recently there was a house fire and the worry is that such items could be set on fire by someone, which can lead to huge difficulties for the safety of families in the area."

He added that he was hoping Bradford Council could take action by placing one of its mobile CCTV cameras in the area in a bid to catch those responsible.

"Local residents are fed up with fly tipping in this spot and have reported that it is leading to mice in the area."

"I would be asking our council officers to see if they can gather any evidence to catch the culprits so tough action can be taken."

He added the Council has taken tough measures against other "irresponsible" fly-tippers which has seen them fined in court.

"Fly-tipping is illegal," he warned, "and costs the local authority a lot of money - money which could be otherwise used on essential services, including for vulnerable children and elderly people.

"Having fly-tipping removed from here is not a long term solution to a long term issue, I will be working with our local area officers to ask for a plan to tackle the ongoing fly-tipping issue in this spot as this is having a high impact on the lives of local residents."

A spokesman for the Council said: “If you see fly-tipping taking place, please note down as many details as possible, including vehicle licence plate numbers and inform the Council.”
