THE A658 Harrogate Road is closed both ways because of a serious accident in Apperley Bridge.
Local people are reporting that it was a fatal crash and the air ambulance was believed to have been in attendance.
Police said they received a report of a two-car collision at 5.44am today.
Emergency services attended the incident and found a Ford Focus and a Vauxhall Astra had crashed on Harrogate Road, close to the junction with Parkin Lane.
The accident happened outside the Bridge Cafe.
Diversions are in place.
There is currently heavy traffic between Apperley Road and Apperley Lane.
West Yorkshire Police are currently at the scene.
They are advising motorists to find an alternative route this morning.
A police spokesperson said inquiries were continuing into the incident.
