Five community centres in Keighley will get a cash boost thanks to a mould-breaking organisation.

The Children's University, part of Bradford University, which funds education outside the national curriculum, has raised £5,000 for the as yet unidentified centres.

The university raises funds allowing youngsters to experience science, engineering and maths in ways they cannot in school.

And it is particularly interested in reaching Asian girls.

Miss Victoria Foxley-Sayles, of the Children's University, said: "We are about challenging stereotypes - breaking the mould. We want children to experience as much as possible so they can make informed life choices."

The community centres will each get £1,000 to spend as they see fit on their environment to encourage parental involvement in education.

Miss Foxley-Sayles added: "We don't just want to raise the aspirations of the kids we want to raise the aspirations of the whole community. We like to work with the community as a whole outside of schools.

"Bradford has quite a lot of environmental input and we feel that Keighley has not had the same input. It sometimes feels like it is a poor relation to Bradford."

Northern Gas and Keighley Area Committee have donated the money.
