A 55-year-old disabled man was rescued from his home in Liversedge when a neighbour heard his smoke alarm.

After being plucked from his home in Twelfth Avenue, the man was treated for smoke inhalation by firefighters and taken to Dewsbury District Hospital by ambulance for checks.

Fire crews from Brighouse and Cleckheaton attended the blaze in the living room of the bungalow at around 1.40pm today.

Lee Benson, station manager at Cleckheaton fire station, said: "We believe it was caused by smoking. It could have been a lot worse if it was not for his neighbours and his smoke alarm."

His crew conducted home safety checks in the area and fitted 14 properties with smoke alarms after the incident. Home safety checks are free. Contact your local fire station for more information.
