A man whose home has been flooded three times in just over a year is calling for action to bring an end to his nightmare.

Stuart Shaw made the appeal after his home was flooded with four feet of water and he was left with serious damage to his property after Yorkshire Water began working on a burst main.

Mr Shaw, 41, who has lived with his wife Mags in Ghyll Royd, Guiseley, for 12 years, said the flooding problems began just over a year ago when Yorkshire Water began carrying out work on the A65.

Since then the couple have had to endure three floods at their home and have counted the cost in extensive damage.

Mr Shaw said the burst mains had all been on the A65 and the water had run into a block of four houses in nearby Ghyll Royd.

Mr Shaw said Yorkshire Water had been working on the burst main during the night without warning householders. "The most annoying thing was that Yorkshire Water was on site trying to fix it," he said. "But rather than wake us so we could salvage something they thought it was better to let us sleep.

"I was in London and was woken up at four o'clock in the morning with my wife crying, saying we were getting flooded again."

He said the basement, which had been converted just before the start of the flooding problems, was left under four feet of water in the latest incident.

The couple and their two young children were left without heating when the water damaged the boiler. They are also counting the cost of damage to a washing machine, a dryer, a freezer and Christ-mas presents, as well as the computer and printer in the office conversion.

Anthony Tanner is one of the people living in the row of four houses.

Mr Tanner, who lives with his wife Diane, said he had delayed having an extension built after recent flooding and had only just gone ahead with it when the latest one happened.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: "We apologise to customers in Ghyll Royd for the burst main which caused flooding to properties."

He said the affected water main would be renewed as soon as possible.
