‘POLICE Speed Check’ signs are to go up on the main routes into Pool-in-Wharfedale.

The move is part of a package of road safety measures that have been agreed following an online meeting involving Leeds City Council, ward councillors, Pool Parish Council, the police and residents.

Other actions to be taken include:

*Installing a wooden bollard near the zebra crossing on Main Street ‘to prevent people using it as a method of exiting the Post Office car park’

*Exploring the possibility of upgrading the a zebra crossing - for a cost of £60,000 - to a full, lights-controlled pedestrian crossing

*The police providing written confirmation that they will be undertaking routine speed checks throughout the village

There was less positive news about some other ideas, such as a move to reduce the speed limit through Pool - including on its A-roads - to 20mph, but overall Councillor Barry Anderson (Con, Adel & Wharfedale) was pleased.

He said: “This was a very successful meeting. Everyone had an open mind; the residents were able to raise their concerns, the police were able to respond as to what they had been doing and proposed to do in terms of speed monitoring, and the Highways officer was equally willing to work with everyone to come up with practical solutions.

“Hopefully there will be quick progress on the ‘quick wins’ and work will continue apace on the medium to long term initiatives. Sourcing funding will be one of the more problematic issues Highways are going to have to face.

“There is still a lot of work to be done as these initiatives only really scratch the surface of the underlying problem.”

He added that the council still had to address other issues including air quality on Main Street and the possibility of a relief road or HGV ban for the village. The council still plans to proceed with a 20mph zone for Pool’s side streets over the coming year.
