Raids were carried out on a number of Bradford restaurants last night by immigration officers looking for illegal workers.

The raids, which were carried out by the Borders and Immigration Agency, were part of a national clampdown on illegal workers.

Among the addresses raided in Bradford were the Saffron restaurant in Leeds Road and Omar Khan's restaurant in Little Horton.

One suspected illegal worker was arrested and removed from Saffron but all the staff at Omar Khan's were found to be in order.

Chris Hudson, regional director of the Border and Immigration Agency, said: "The Border and Immigration Agency is committed to tackling illegal migrant working and its harmful social effects. We have teams visiting businesses across the region to make sure they are not breaking the law.

"Illegal working hurts good business, undercuts legal workers, creates illegal profits and puts those employed at risk. Anyone found to be working illegally should know that we will seek to remove them from the country. Last year we enforced the removal of more than 12,000 immigration offenders, more than ever before."

Four arrests were also made at the Bismallah Roti House in Halifax.

All five could face deportation or, if they cannot be removed, loss of employment and state benefits.

Today Mr Khan, the owner of Omar Khan's, said that while he understood the necessity for such visits he believed officers had been excessive in their methods.
