POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision on the M62 yesterday afternoon.

A silver Mitsubishi Lancer was travelling westbound when it was in collision with the central reservation barrier between junctions 28 and 29 at about 5.20pm.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 50s, received medical assistance by members of the public and an off-duty police officer, before being taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The motorway was closed for several hours while the emergency services attended.

Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who witnessed the vehicle driving in the area prior to the collision to contact police.
