Who remembers shopping at Bradford's Woolies? The great retail institution, where aisles were lined with impulse buys, all randomly placed around the vast store.
A farewell chorus of Old Lang Syne brought down the shutters on 70 years’ trading at Woolworth’s, Bradford, March 29, 1984.
Shop assistants embraced while others stood in silence as the last of the shoppers filed out.
All that remained on the shelves were a few small car accessories and computer games.
As the familiar red F.W. Woolworth sign came down, staff said goodbye during a farewell party in the store’s canteen.
Most of the 60 Bradford staff had found other work. Some moved to the Halifax branch, others had taken out early retirement or joined the dole queue.
