BRADFORD Council will be marking Pride Month by lighting up City Hall in rainbow colours for the rest of this month.
June is internationally recognised as Pride Month which celebrates LGBTQ+ communities around the world and campaigns for equal rights and against discrimination and violence. It is normally marked with parades and marches, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, many events have been cancelled, postponed or moved to online forums.
Friday will also mark the four-year anniversary of the mass shooting of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida in 2016.
Bradford City Hall to light up red and white for St George's Day
Council Leader Susan Hinchcliffe said: “Sadly, a number of events, including Bradford’s Pride, which would have taken place last weekend, have been cancelled or postponed until 2021. But, like many other LGBTQ+ communities around the country, Bradford organisers held a very successful online event last month and I had the honour of being a speaker at the event.
“But we still also want to show our support for Pride Month by lighting up our buildings for the rest of this month, showing that our district stands for equality and fair treatment of everyone. We hope that the event can return to the city centre next year.”
