JUNE 2, 1950, readers of Bradford’s Yorkshire Observer Budget were given a rare treat, a four-page picture souvenir from the recent cricket Test Trial, played at Bradford’s Park Avenue.
Unloved by the players, the Test Trial was the ideal way for those at the top to assess the ability and select those for the national side. Stepping onto the daunting Park Avenue ground Jim Laker managed to make an incredible eight wickets for two runs in 14 overs as “The Rest”, including Peter May, were skittled for 27.
