A scheme to encourage families to swap disposable nappies for sustainable, reusable alternatives has proved successful.

Bradford Real Nappy Project began a give-away of free real nappy starter kits a month ago and 69 kits have been sent out so far.

Project manager, Cathy Henwood, said: "We are delighted with the uptake of the scheme and have already had to do a big reorder of nappies to fill demand for the kits.

"At ante natal classes and other groups, parents are keen to give the new kit a go. We hope the scheme will get lots of families to start to use them full time."

Bradford Real Nappy Project has been campaigning for the council to help families get started with real nappies since the project started in 2003.

Anyone expecting a baby or who has a child aged younger than six months can claim a kit from Bradford Council's recycling and waste minimisation office by calling (01274) 438883 or by filling in a form online at www.bradford.gov.uk/realnappy.
