RESIDENTS who fear road closures will lead to traffic congestion on other routes have been told alleviation measures are being put in place.

Rastrick residents have been worried by the increasing amount of traffic using the A6114 Rastrick to Elland route, bringing with it some speed concerns, while repair work is affecting other usual routes between Brighouse and Elland.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for Regeneration and Resources, Coun Jane Scullion said different options had been considered when planning the work.

Calderdale Council has a phased programme of maintenance work which will close the A629 Elland by-pass for spells over the next few months, and the A6025 Brighouse to Elland road is also being closed for repair following the damaged caused by Storm Ciara flooding in February.

Last week the council also announced that Rastrick Bridge at Brighouse will also be closed for important repair work, also to remedy damage caused by the floods.

Coun Scullion (Lab, Luddenden Foot) said police partners had been asked to be extra vigilant in residential areas close to diversion routes.

She said the ongoing closures on the A629 Calderdale Way were to allow for the planing and resurfacing of the carriageway surface, plus maintenance of safety barriers, street lighting and drainage, work which had become unavoidable.

Full closures on certain dates mean the work will be completed in around 12 weeks rather than 18 weeks if work was just done at night.

“The work is being split into four sections and the diversion routes have been carefully planned along the most appropriate roads.

“Whilst the works are ongoing, additional signing is in place on the M62 to encourage drivers to use alternative junctions.

“We will ask our partners in the police to be extra vigilant to traffic offences in residential areas close to diversion routes,” she said.

Coun Scullion said every opportunity to speed up the process would be taken and they were aware of issues on the alternative routes.

“We know the current road closures on Park Road in Elland and Rastrick Bridge are exacerbating traffic issues in the Brighouse area and we’re working hard to reopen these roads as soon as possible.

“Repair work on Rastrick Bridge is starting this month and the first phase of the A629 work will be finished in around two weeks, at which point we expect traffic patterns to change which should relieve some congestion

“A number of different options were explored when planning the work, to ensure the minimum amount of disruption to motorists and neighbouring residents, as well as maintaining the safety of the workforce.

“As with all of our works, they have also been arranged with the assistance of the emergency services and access for their vehicles will be maintained at all times,” said Coun Scullion.
