COUNCILLORS have come out to "quash" the concerns of local people after two police officers were assaulted by a man who had a knife.

West Yorkshire Police attended an address in The Grove, Idle, at around 8.30am yesterday to try find a wanted man.

Officers forced entry to the property and were assaulted by a man with a knife.

Two officers were injured and required hospital treatment, but their injuries were not life threatening.

A man was arrested and taken into custody.

A police cordon was reportedly in place on the street where the altercation happened, for some of the morning.

Councillor Jeanette Sunderland, Leader of The Liberal Democrat and Independent Group whose ward is Idle and Thackley, admits the attack is shocking, but that the public need not fear.

She said: “I think what this incident shows is that officers just going about their daily business are at risk and deserve our support even more.

“Local people don’t need to be worried, police quashed it straight away.

“The person involved is in custody and the police officers went to hospital and I understand both returned to give evidence and went home.

“We give all our thanks to all those working on the frontline, who are risking their lives every day.

“Because, you genuinely never do know what’s round the corner.

“It’s quite shocking because it’s a nice, quiet place.

“If the public are worried, they don’t need to be – we need to send our best wishes to both police officers for a speedy recovery and seeing them back at work.”

Another councillor from the area, Julie Humphreys (Lab, Idle and Thackley), was at the scene in the morning.

She specifically wanted to halt any rumours that were flying around on social media and ensure the local community knows they are safe.

The councillor said: “I went up this morning and spoke to the detectives not long after it happened.

“The main thing is, we need to be allaying concerns and worries.

"People are going round on social media, but the police have got it under control.

“My thoughts are with the police officers and families.

“We’ve got to try and make sure that everybody else in the surrounding area feels safe.”

The force itself was also left appalled at what happened to two of its officers.

Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Andy Farrell said: “West Yorkshire Police will not tolerate assaults on its officers and has introduced a range of measures under the Assaults on Emergency Services Act to assist with these matters.”

The DCI also moved to address any concerns local people may have.

He said: “Officers from Bradford District CID are continuing enquiries into this incident, which is being treated as an isolated matter.

“Local officers have been deployed into the area to provide reassurance and anyone with concerns is advised to speak with them."
