VETERAN fundraiser Jeffrey Long has received fan mail from as far away as Essex after his latest effort.

The 88-year-old former paratrooper from Bingley raised £1,246 for Support Our Paras in his 2.6 Challenge last week.

His exploit attracted attention from Montgomery Junior School in Colchester with pupils sending him pictures.

A message from the school said: "A little something to brighten your day from the children of our local Montgomery Junior School.

"If you are able and would like to send us a photo of you with your picture and/or write a message back to to the children I am sure they would love to hear from you."

Mr Long also handed over 32 pairs of socks to David Myers, manager of his local Salvation Army branch, for those the charity helps because he had walked at least 32 miles.

He said they were very welcome because the charity is very short of men's socks and underpants.
