POLICE investigating the murder of Saleem Butt from Batley have charged a second man in connection with his death.

Alexander MacKay, 46, of School Crescent, Dewsbury, appeared before Leeds Magistrates Court this morning charged with murder.

Craig Stanton, 42, from Southgate, Huddersfield, who was previously charged with Mr Butt’s murder, was remanded into custody after he appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday.

Enquiries into the murder of Mr Butt, 61, remain ongoing by the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team.

A 37-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail, and a 59-year-old man remains on bail for the same offence.

Mr Butt was tied up and killed in a sustained attack in his own home, and was found dead by police officers at his address in Hyrstlands Road, Batley, at around 9pm on April 23.

Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Tony Nicholson, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: "Saleem is a man who lived on his own - a quiet, honest, trustworthy man. A man who has done nothing at all to elicit this sort of horrific death."
