MORE than 120,000 birthday cards have been collected for Keighley-born NHS fundraiser and Second World War veteran Captain Tom Moore, who is due to turn 100 on Thursday.

The cards, sent from around the world, have been opened by staff and displayed at Bedford School, near Capt Tom’s Bedfordshire home.

Capt Tom has so far raised £29 million in aid of NHS Charities Together.

He initially aimed to raise £1,000 by walking 100 25-metre laps of his garden in time for his 100th birthday.

He completed the final four laps of the challenge on April 16, by which time he had raised more than £12m, with a special guard of honour by the 1st battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment.

Last week, he appeared by video link as the guest of honour to officially open the new NHS Nightingale Hospital in Harrogate.

And he became the oldest artist to reach number one on the UK singles chart after his cover of You’ll Never Walk Alone, featuring Michael Ball and the NHS Voices of Care Choir, landed the top spot.
