CAPTAIN Tom Moore says he is completely overawed after winning a Pride of Britain award and being handed an all-star video salute.

The 99-year-old Keighley-born veteran, who has raised more than £28 million and counting for the NHS for his 100-lap walking challenge, has now won a prestigious award.

Captain Tom was honoured with a Pride of Britain award, the annual prizegiving event which honours the heroes among the public.

With the ceremony set to take place in the autumn, Captain Moore has already received a flurry of nominations for a prize from the public.

Awards ceremony host, former Countdown presenter Carol Vorderman, appeared on a live link-up with Captain Moore to surprise him with the prize on today’s Good Morning Britain.

She said he had been handed the award in recognition for his modesty, determination and selflessness in taking up his walking challenge.

A star-studded video featuring celebrities and sports stars including Dame Kelly Holmes, Harry Kane, Ray Winston and Sir David Jason was played as they all paid tribute, them all giving the veteran a salute.

He is scheduled to receive the award in person at its ceremony later in the year.

Captain Tom said: “I am totally in awe of this award. It’s such a prestigious one. It’s an amazing award.

I am completely taken aback by this. I am overawed by that video too. I am completely taken aback by all of these famous people.

“That’s absolutely amazing.

“It’s very difficult for me to believe this. The Pride of Britain is a very important one.

“I can’t be more proud than be in a position to receive it from you.

“Thank you to all the people who have nominated me for this award. I am very humbled to receive this magnificent award.”

Celebrities, also including Katherine Jenkins and Dame Julie Walters, took part in the thank you video.

Sir David said: "In the 1940s, you and your mates stepped up to the plate to help the country out and here you are again, you are a hero. And I salute you."

The Quiz star Sheen said: "What you have achieved throughout your life is remarkable."

Captain Tom said he was "absolutely overawed" by the messages.

Piers Morgan, who helped set up the Pride of Britain awards more than 20 years ago, also paid tribute to Captain Tom.

He said: “You are what these awards were made for.

“Your very simple idea to yomp around your garden has turned into one of the greatest fundraising endeavours we have ever seen in this country.”

Morgan joked Captain Moore will have to have bodyguards when he collects his award in person at the ceremony later this year. Captain Tom replied he hoped they would be attractive bodyguards.
