Bradford Council will be carrying out essential surface dressing on 158 roads across the district over the next few months.

This programme of essential work is scheduled to start at the beginning of May and is likely to continue until July.

The council says that its staff and its contractors will adhere to the guidance from the Government in relation to prevention of the spread of the coronavirus and as much of the work depends on the warmer weather of the summer months it is not able to be put on hold.

During the works the roads will be covered in a layer of bitumen before aggregate is applied and then rolled to create a new surface.

This type of road resurfacing is seen as essential work which not only seals the road surface but reduces the risk of potholes forming. It also increases skid resistance and prolongs the life of the road.

Leaflets will be posted through doors and signs will be put up well in advance to notify local residents of the need to move parked cars to allow the work to be done as quickly as possible.

Two more years of roads disruption for Bradford as electricity network upgrade continues

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: “The Department for Transport has said that roads should remain open and that they expect certain road works, including emergency work and surface dressing to continue, ensuring that life-saving medicine, equipment, supplies and key workers including carers and NHS staff can travel.

“We are asking local residents to respect the people working on the roads, as they are continuing to provide vital public services at this challenging time. We understand that there will be more vehicles parked on streets due to people following the guidance to stay at home, but we are asking people to make sure their vehicles are parked elsewhere on the days the work is carried out so that it can be done as quickly as possible.”
