BRADFORD council has issued a stern warning to pubs who continue to ignore lockdown guidance during the coronavirus pandemic.

Council enforcement officers and the police will be ramping up patrols on pubs which remain open or offering lock-ins with drinkers.

The authority's licensing team is woring with West Yorkshire Police to identify any premises still serving drinks so they can service prohibition notices.

The prohibition notice will explain why the officer thinks there is a risk of serious health risk to customers and staff and require them to stop immediately.

Failure to comply with the notice can lead to prosecution in the courts.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “We are happy to support Bradford Council’s efforts to ensure Government life-saving guidelines on social distancing are followed.”

Members of the public can contact the council if they know of any public house which has remained open, meaning the team can take action.

People should email Licensing@bradford.gov.uk or call on 01274 431000.

Takeaway or delivery services must not include alcohol if their licence does not permit off sales.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, executive member for healthy people and places said: “We know this is a difficult time for businesses and also pub regulars - particularly at holiday time - but we can’t allow people to put lives at risk.

“We are experiencing an extremely serious health emergency and those working on the front line in intensive care units across the country are begging us to help them by observing the social distancing rules to stop the NHS from being overwhelmed with virus cases.

“Bradford Council will do all it can to support our NHS and if that means taking legal action against those who ignore safety guidelines then we won’t hesitate.”
