UP to £25 million could be made available by the Government to enable Calderdale Council to undertake major projects in Brighouse.

The town is in line for up to £25 million as part of the Government’s Cities Fund. Calderdale Council and partners have begun listing proposals which might benefit the town.

Brighouse was named as one of 100 towns to benefit from the fund late last year. Keighley and Shipley will also be eligible for funding, with £25m shared between the two towns.

Potential projects for Brighouse noted by Calderdale Council’s Cabinet include road, walking, cycling and pedestrian improvements between Brighouse and Bailiff Bridge, around the town centre and at the established Birds Royd and Armitage Road industrial centres.

Improvements to Thornton Square and Brighouse Market, the development of the former Sugden’s flour mill site in the town centre, a living-over-shops initiative to support town centre viability and master planning for the whole area are also likely to feature.

A range of investment or renewal opportunities including creating modern workspaces in older environments, employment programmes cultural programmes, business development, a programme to reinvigorate housing and retail stock and a climate change biodiversity programme investing in renewable energy are also likely to be included.

Ultra-fast broadband or City Fibre to improve connectivity is also in the frame.
