BRADFORD Council has said it is making arrangements should a temporary mortuary be required amid the coronavirus crisis - but has not revealed details of where this might be.

It comes after it was revealed the Shay Stadium at Halifax may be called into use as a temporary morgue if the number of funerals and cremations in Calderdale exceeds the amount the borough can cope with in the coming weeks amid the coronavirus crisis.

Andrew Pitts, Calderdale Council’s Assistant Director for Neighbourhoods, said preparations were being made although it was hoped they would not have to be implemented.

“In Calderdale, the Shay Stadium has been identified as the most appropriate location for this purpose,” he said.
“Whilst we are required to plan for this requirement, we very much hope not to need to use it.”

Meanwhile, Bradford Council has said lots of community centres and business locations across the district are being used by the council, its partners and volunteers to support the effort  during the crisis.

A spokesperson said: “We are grateful that people are opening up their doors to help the people of the district in this, our time of need.”
