PEOPLE across the country have taken part in a mass round of applause for the frontline healthcare heroes who are risking their own lives battling the coronavirus pandemic.

The Clap For Carers initiative saw residents applauding from their doorsteps, windows and balconies at 8pm, with some venturing into the streets, and motorists joining in by tooting their horns.

Meanwhile notable buildings were lit up in blue for the salute as part of the #lightitblue campaign which has been organised by members of the events and entertainment industry as a way to say thank you.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were among those applauding the NHS as part of the Clap For Carers initiative.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted: "On behalf of the whole country, I want to thank all the incredible nurses, doctors, NHS support staff & carers who are working flat out to fight coronavirus ?? #ClapForOurCarers #ClapForNHS To help them, and protect the NHS, we need everyone to stay at home #StayHomeSaveLives"

Star Wars actor John Boyega said it was "beautiful" hearing his neighbours take part in the round of applause for NHS workers.

He wrote on Twitter: "Hearing my neighbours shout out and clap for the NHS beautiful."

The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and their staff all separately joined in with a round of applause at Birkhall in Scotland.

Charles, who has tested positive for coronavirus, and Camilla are isolating from each other and their small number of staff.

Clapping also took place at Windsor Castle where the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are staying.
