ONE positive to come from having to stay at home is that rising numbers of people are returning to doorstep deliveries of their daily pint. There's been unprecedented demand for milk, with one delivery business reporting an increase of 25,000 customers and recruiting 100 milkmen.

After years of dwindling rounds, with supermarkets almost wiping them out, milk delivery is back in our communities, playing a vital role. Let’s hope that after this is all over, people continue to have doorstep milk. Delivering milk bottles and collecting the empties is better for the planet than plastic cartons, and milkmen are a neighbourhood look-out. And there’s nothing quite so comforting as the early morning sound of an electric milk float trundling down the road.
