A COUNCILLOR says Trading Standards officials have visited businesses following public criticism over price rises during the coronavirus crisis.

Cllr Mohammed Shafiq (Lab, Bradford Moor) says action is being taken against shop owners who are "abusing and taking advantage" of the current crisis.

He says he has received reports from residents claiming a chicken worth £10 has been on sale for £60.

CORONAVIRUS LATEST:

Cllr Shafiq's enforcement comes after a similar hardline stance from Bradford Council leader, Cllr Susan Hinchclife, after reports of price hikes across the Bradford district.

Cllr Shafiq said: "I have spoken to a number of constituents about this, about prices rising drastically.

"I have spoken to local businesses about this.

"There was one report of a chicken worth £10 being sold for £60.

"Some of the businesses have been selfish and greedy in what we are all going through at the moment.

"I would urge businesses to not put profit before local communities.

"We know they have to make profit to survive, but they will still be able to make money.

"I and my colleagues will not hesitate to be the voice against, oppression, misuse, abuse and those taking advantages of current crisis.

"People’s voice has been heard and thanks to all my friends and constituents for their support for our campaign for our local communities.

Cllr Shafiq also urged shoppers not to panic buy as the crisis continues.
