A BOY is building his own version of Legoland in his bedroom after his dad made a bed inspired by the popular toy.

Kylan Smith, six, now goes to bed surrounded by a multi-coloured mock version of the plastic Lego bricks.

He helped his dad, Daniel, build the bed, which took three months overall.

The Bradford Academy student already has a wall in his bedroom devoted to a large picture of his Lego heroes and has now gone one better.

The bricks, larger replicas of the real Danish toy, are made out of wood, but the Lego theme is not going to stop there.

Daniel, of Wibsey, is now moving on to convert Kylan’s other bedroom furniture, namely his wardrobe and chest of drawers, into similar Lego-themed items.

Daniel said: “He is getting more and more obsessed with Lego, it used to be football and toy cars.

“He loves it. It’s a heavy bed, so it’s not going to be moved anytime soon. It’s quite a big bed.

“It has six different colours. I don’t know how many bricks I created. We had the time and space and decided to do something.

“In total I think the bed took approximately three months due to doing this in our spare time, but the painting took a big chunk of this due to each colour having three coats of paint and only doing one colour at a time.

“We used a mixture of materials from recycled plywood for the inner frame, scrap pallets for the Lego discs, to purchased timbers for the outer frame.

“I work as a mechanical draughtsman which came in handy while I built this. It took a while as we would paint one colour and have to wait for that to dry to carry on.

“He wanted a Lego bed and we couldn’t find one anywhere, so I decided to build one for him. I started it just before Christmas at work and Kylan helped me. We did it during our spare time.

“Halfway through making it, I thought ‘what have I got myself into?’

“It is hard to give an exact price on the costings on this due to using some recycled materials, but if I had to gauge this, I’d say it was £150.

“I do remember using 80 metres of frog tape.

“I was not a Lego fan growing up myself, I was more of an outdoors type of boy.”

Daniel added Kylan cannot wait to show off his new-look bed, which cost around £150 to make, to his friends at school and his bedroom is full of Lego sets.

He said: “Nobody in the world has the same bed as him.

“Kylan has been telling everyone at school about it. It was the icing on the cake, we finished it earlier this week.

“The most expensive part of building the bed was the paint, I used non-toxic bright high-sheen finishes for it.”

The popularity of Lego continues to pass down through the generations.

The company was founded in August 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen. The brand, Lego, is derived from the Danish words ‘leg godt’, meaning ‘play well’.

In the first half of 2015, The Lego Group became the world’s largest toy company by revenue, with sales amounting to US$2.1 billion.

But the company’s output is not just confined to plastic building bricks as they have produced a number of blockbuster movies.
