A WOMAN from the Bradford district, who was due to fly to one of Spain's Balearic Islands today, with Jet2, has spoken after the airline cancelled all of its flights to the country amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The Baildon woman, who wishes to be referred to only by her first name - Jo - was due to fly to the island at 2.30pm, with her family, and was just about to set off for the aiport when she saw the update from Jet2.

Earlier today, the Yeadon-based airline announced the cancellations and even said that some flights destined for Spain had turned around mid-air and returned to the UK.

Jo said, "We were due to fly to Mallorca at 2.30pm today. We rung Jet2 last night to check that our holiday could still go ahead, and they said yes.

"So we got up this morning, dropped the dog off, finished packing and we were sat on the drive at about 10.30am, ready to set off to the airport, when we saw the announcement on Jet2's Facebook page.

"Although it's frustrating, we feel that Jet2 have done a good thing for their customers and should be commended.

"As the FCO advice had not been changed, they were under no obligation to cancel, and some other companies are still dropping people into lock-down zones.

"I broke my leg on my last holiday, in October, and had to come back early - so we've had a run of bad luck with holidays.

"We were really looking forward to the sun and the sea, after 5 months of getting over my broken leg.

"But, overall, we want to say well done to Jet2 for putting customers first, in this day where profits often go above all else.

"I do hope they can weather this storm and we will be happy to amend our dates to a time later in the year and keep our holiday with them."

With the death toll from coronavirus in Spain currently standing at over 130, the country's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, has delcared a two-week state of emergency.

Jet2 said, in a statement this morning, "In response to local measures introduced throughout Spain to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including the closure of bars, restaurants, shops and activities including any water sports, we have taken the decision to cancel all flights to mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands with immediate effect.

"We know these local measures will have a significant impact on our customers’ holidays, which is why we have taken this decision.

"We are contacting our customers who are currently in these destinations, and who are due to travel, to advise them of their options, so we urge customers not to call us.

"This is a fast-moving and complex situation and we are reviewing our programme as a matter of urgency, so that we can fly customers back to the UK.

"The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority, and we would like to thank our customers for their understanding."
