A NEW eco shop will be opening in Saltaire village inspired by the owner's greengrocer grandparents.

First-time business owner Annie Claridge, who has been fighting anxiety induced by climate change fears, felt her stress could be used for the greater good and make a difference to her part of the planet.

She feels it is especially poignant to open it in the home to the well known philanthropist, Titus Salt, himself.

Now Mr W's - a low waste sustainable store cupboard shop - is coming to 13a Victoria Road this month.

She will stock store cupboard dry goods (rice, pasta, beans, pulses, flour, sugar, cereal, dried fruits, herbs, spices), oils and vinegars, coffee and tea, household cleaning and laundry liquids, shampoo, conditioner, hand and body washes.

This venture is going to be a labour of love."

Everyone will be able to bring and fill their own tubs, jars and bottles to take home quantities that suit the size of their household, without the wasted packaging that has nowhere to go except landfill. People can also buy the above re-usable containers.

Annie told the Telegraph & Argus: "Back in 1903, the shop was a greengrocers. Taking this beautiful building back to its roots and creating a community focused store cupboard of a store within it makes me smile. A lot.

"My Grandad was a milkman. My Grandma worked all her life on an East End market.

"I think that there must be something in the genes and that it is my turn to don the apron."

But to get started, Annie needs the local community to get behind her. She has set up a crowdfunding site with all money going towards set up costs and keeping overheads to a minimum. Annie is offering rewards in return for support and has the backing of a number of other businesses who hope she can get Mr W's off the ground.

Those who donate can get free classes at Heather Yoga, coffee discounts and vouchers for Dandelion Cafe or Hopwoods and even puncture repairs from Saltaire Cycles.

"I have no wads of cash, shareholders, long lost uncles or loans," Annie said.

"I'm trying to make it as accessible as possible.

"This venture is going to be a labour of love."

Annie has also created an unusual way of boosting funds by auctioning off signed books from celebrities or popular authors. She also promises to tattoo the name of the person who donates the largest amount on her big toe. Her right toe is reserved for the names of famous faces who backed her plight. This includes: Dawn O Porter (Choose Love co-founder) and Tom Kerridge.

She said: "The plan is: keep overheads low so the prices are as accessible as possible and sustainable shopping options extend far into the community. The more everyone can do, the easier it is going to be.

"Hop on board the toe tattooed army."
