THE FUNERAL of an iconic Bradford City fan, who was “one of the first” of the Windrush generation to attend games, takes place today.

Algie Sennett Brown - who was affectionately known as “Sammy Pogo” - died at his home, aged 84, in the arms of his beloved family on Valentine's Day.

Mr Brown followed his beloved Bradford City for more than 50 years.

But his story began in a little place called Dias Hanover, Montego Bay, on the island of Jamaica.

It was here that his love for sport was first stimulated, playing football at 20-years-old.

He then decided to leave Jamaica to find work in England, and the Green Lane area of Manningham, in Bradford, became his new home.

Family friend, Karl Oxford, said: "Sammy was one of the first Windrush generation coming to Bradford from Jamaica, and was one of the early pioneers to go and support his much-loved local football team, Bradford City.

"This inspired other people from the local Caribbean community, and the Asian community, to go and support the club."

Mr Brown initially listened to sport on his handheld radio in the 1960s, but quickly became a fixture and much-loved figure at Valley Parade, after realising it was just a short walk from his home.

He began attended more and more games in the 1970s.

Mr Brown's family said: "Sammy had a booming voice, with a strong Jamaican accent, and was loved by everyone at the ground.

"Many fans would ask him for the football results of other games that were being played around the country at the same time, as he was listening to other games on his radio.

"Sammy would shout out the results of a match to the fans, such as 'Leeds are losing 2-1'.

"Over the years, Sammy would bring along many friends from the local Caribbean community to watch football, who had never been to a football match before, and it wouldn't take them long before they also became full-time and long-term Bradford City supporters.

"Sammy went on to become a long-time supporter of the club, home and away.

"He was a travelling member of the club and enjoyed travelling to different clubs and visiting new towns and cities.

"It was like an adventure for Sammy and his Jamaican background."

It wasn't just about professional football for Mr Brown, who leaves behind eight grandchildren and two sons.

One of those sons, Dan Brown, used to attend games with him.

He said "He'd watch Campion and a lot of teams, Sunday league teams."

His other son, Delroy Brown, added: "There's just so much about him.

"He would go out of his way to do something for somebody.

"He was into everything - in darts teams, playing dominoes, watching speedway.

"He wouldn't stay in, he was always out watching sport."

Mr Brown's funeral will be held today, at 11am.

The ceremony is at All Saints Church, Little Horton, Bradford, BD5 0NG.

There will then be a celebration of his life at The Railway Club, Wakefield Road, Bradford, BD4 7PE.
