THE Halfway House in Birkenshaw is the latest winner of the Camra pub of the season award for the area.
Presented by the Heavy Woollen Camra branch, the pub was a traditional part of the Tetley's estate until being taken over by one of the new pub companies.
Managers Eileen and Jock could see that the cask Tetley's was appreciated so they ensured the quality was always kept up to standard, adding a guest ale as demand steadily increased, said branch secretary Paul Dixey.
"Now their four handpulls are kept busy with two rotating guests and Ossett Yorkshire Blonde. The guests are usually Yorkshire beers to suit the local palate.
"The brewery have promised an upgrade to the bar and an increase from four to six handpulls as the cask beer turnover should be able to support them while maintaining quality."
He said that what also attracts locals to the pub is the many events held there, with something most days of the week, including a quiz, pool and poker, cash bingo, karaoke and live music. Snacks are also provided on games nights.
