A BRADFORD cafe will be serving up traditional school meals tomorrow to celebrate International School Meals Day.

School dinners have their origin in Bradford, and started with a campaign in the city in 1907.

The first meal consisted of scotch broth, fruit tart, bread and a mug of water for each child.

Today Bradford social enterprise café The Canteen will be celebrating International School Meals Day by serving up old fashioned steamed puddings, made by their very own learners. The Canteen and adjoining Cookery school was established by aspire-igen to encourage young people into the catering and hospitality industry through combining qualifications with practical training sessions.

Catering and Hospitality manager Joe Grant said “Since it’s opening in October 2017, the Canteen itself has served over 4,000 free meals to eligible learners and has every intention of keeping this great initiative going. I personally can’t wait to try a bowl of homemade jam roly poly and custard.”
